The Caltech/MIT Enterprise
Forum Presents:
PATRIOT
VENTURES:
Breaking Into the Homeland Security Market
In
this program, the Caltech/MIT Enterprise Forum takes a deep look what
it takes for a high-tech venture to break into the homeland security market.
Southern California
is home to some of the country's largest and busiest airports, harbors,
defense installations and entertainment complexes - all now re-assessing
their needs for security. With the federal government budgeting $39 billion
for homeland defense and the increasing demand for improved security in
public and private facilities, many high-tech entrepreneurs see an opportunity
to meet this need.
Southern California
is also the home of the major defense contractors who are well positioned
to win the bulk of federal and state funds ear-marked for high-tech infrastructure
security systems. Winning a government grant poses many hurdles for a
new venture, which often lacks the desired security clearances, prior
contracting expertise, and patience for funding decisions. Even in the
private sector, corporations may be slow to select novel technologies
or reluctant to form strategic alliances with new ventures.
In this program, the
Caltech/MIT Enterprise Forum takes a deep look at what it takes for a
high-tech venture to break into the homeland security market.
- What are the infrastructure
security needs of public agencies and corporations?
- What technologies
are relevant to these security needs?
- What companies
are likely to compete in this market?
- How should a new
venture approach this market?
- How can a new venture
seek an alliance with an established government contractor?
- What are the risks
of pursuing homeland security business?
We address these questions
with a presentation from Sergio Robleto, head of the Los Angeles office
of Kroll, Inc. and Bill Lyte, Senior Vice President of Tetra Tech, Inc.
Both firms provide security-related products and services to corporations
and public agencies. We continue with panel commentary on case presentations
from two emerging companies with advanced technology applicable to infrastructure
defense. We close with a round of audience questions.
