The Caltech/MIT Enterprise Forum Presents:

THE STATE OF WIRELESS:
California opportunities in a global market

A panel of investors, analysts and entrepreneurs examines the business trends within California's wide-ranging wireless industry. Join this discussion of where the entrepreneurial opportunities are and learn from the experiences of two early-stage companies that are pursuing domestic and international markets.

California is home to the largest concentration of wireless firms in the nation: greater Los Angeles employs the most people, San Diego has the highest overall growth rate, and Silicon Valley leads in capital investment. With innovations in satellite communications, integrated circuits, and mobile devices, California companies dominate the international wireless sector.

Despite these efforts, the industry faces major hurdles in widespread adoption of wireless technologies, both in our state and abroad. Economic uncertainty, the lack of common technical standards, and the challenges of last mile connectivity have so far impeded the anticipated deployment of wireless and commercial opportunities.

Nonetheless, $5 billion in venture capital has migrated to this sector since 1993. This has promoted breakthroughs in optics, manufacturing, and software systems, which are being deployed around the world. Californian companies also lead the development of standards, which promise to accelerate industry development. The Caltech/MIT Enterprise Forum looks at these factors with key questions for new wireless ventures:

  • What are the remaining obstacles to greater adoption?
  • What sources of capital are most appropriate for new ventures?
  • Which opportunities are attractive to venture capital?
  • What are successful market approaches?
  • What special pitfalls characterize venturing in wireless?
  • When do the benefits outweigh the costs of international opportunities?

To address these questions, Cliff Numark of O'Melveny Consulting will present the results of a State-funded study on the status of California's wireless sector. Co-authored by the San Diego Regional Technology Alliance and O'Melveny, the report provides an overview of the industry, its main technology components, and the directions for future growth.

We then turn to our panel of experts to expand on the keynote address with their perspective on venturing in wireless. Following a break for networking and refreshments, we'll hear from two companies that used different approaches to funding development and building markets.
